The Hidden Price of Corporate Greed

Join WCAN! for a free film screening of CRUDE and a discussion on why it is important that we hold corporations accountable. We will address why immigrant communities are vulnerable during economic hardships and why economic justice is crucial for the well-being of our families and communities. All across the nation, weather your family has been separated, you’ve lost your job, your home; we’ve all felt the price of unchecked corporate power and we want to hear your story! Will you join us?

Where: Trinity Lutheran Church

6215 196th St. SW
Lynnwood, WA 98036

When:Friday Oct. 15, 2010

Time: 6-8pm

About the film: CRUDE is the story of one of the largest and most controversial environmental lawsuits on the planet. The landmark case takes place in the Amazon jungle of Ecuador, pitting 30,000 indigenous and colonial rainforest dwellers against the U.S. oil giant Chevron. Crude focuses on the human cost of our addiction to oil and the increasingly difficult task of holding a major corporation accountable.

Sign the Pledge: Drop the I-Word

WCAN! has joined the I-Word Campaign! Sign the pledge online today to drop the I-Word!

You wouldn’t call someone a w*tback, or the n-word. Saying “illegals” is just as bad.The I-Word creates an environment of hate by exploiting racial fear and economic anxiety, creating an easy scapegoat for complex issues, and OK-ing violence against those labeled with the word.People are not illegal.Let’s stop feeding the hate machine. Drop the I-Word.

Along with communities across the country, we are asking all media organizations and journalists to uphold ethical and professional journalism standards by dropping the I-Word today!

Watch the video below to learn about the campaign!

A Cautionary Tale —Opinions, Myths, Realities: Exploring Immigration Justice

Join us for a film screening of 9500 Liberty, a discussion, and community forum on Immigration Justice!

When: Saturday, October 2nd

Time: 3 – 7 p.m.

Where:  Edmonds Unitarian Universalist Church (EUUC)
8109 224 Street SW Edmonds, WA 98026

9500 Liberty (3 – 5 p.m.): An award-winning documentary that follows how Prince William County, Virginia becomes ground zero in America’s explosive battle over immigration policy when elected officials adopt a law requiring police officers to question anyone they have "probable cause" to suspect is an undocumented immigrant.

9500 Liberty reveals the startling vulnerability of a local government, targeted by national anti-immigration networks using the Internet to frighten and intimidate lawmakers and citizens. Alarmed by a climate of fear and racial division, residents form a resistance using YouTube videos and virtual townhalls, setting up a real-life showdown in the seat of county government.

Panel discussion with local advocates; Q & A (5 – 6 p.m.)
OneAmerica
WashingtonCAN (Community Action Network)

Soup with conversation/discussion as desired (6 – 7 p.m.)
