Film Summary:

"Tony & Janina’s American Wedding is a feature length documentary that gets to the heart of the broken, red tape ridden U.S. immigration system.   After 18 years in America, Tony and Janina Wasilewski’s family is torn apart when Janina is deported back to Poland, taking their 6 year old son Brian with her.  Set on the backdrop of the Chicago political scene, and featuring Illinois Congressman Luis Gutierrez at the heart of the immigration reform movement, this film follows the Wasilewski’s 3-year struggle to be reunited, as their Senator Barack Obama rises to the Presidency.  With a fresh perspective on the immigration conversation, this film tells the untold human rights story of Post-9/11, that every undocumented immigrant in America faces today, with the power to open the conversation for change."  Visit film website:  http://tonyandjanina.com/

Write to your legislators! Maureen did!

Washington CAN member Maureen comes to the office once a week by bus from Lake City to volunteer. Not only is she a delightful person who keeps me company and helps me make phone calls, she is very inspiring. Maureen was so upset about the upcoming budget cuts that she wrote 4 letters: one for Governor Gregoire, two for her representatives, and one for her senator.

Maureen's handwritten letters should be arriving in her legislators' mailboxes this week, just before they start the 2011 session.

Call , write, email your lawmakers and tell them that cuts to social programs hurt our communities, and they need to be brave by closing corporate tax loopholes and finding new sources of revenue.

Thank you, Maureen, for all the work that you do. And thank you to those who are out there fighting for social justice. -J

Release of new report – 2010 Northwest Job Gap: Searching for Work that Pays

Despite widespread talk of economic recovery, jobs that pay enough to meet a family’s needs in Washington are few and far between, according to a new report released today and prepared by the Alliance for a Just Society. The 2010 Northwest Job Gap Report, Searching for Work that Pays, finds that 42% of job openings pay less than a living wage for a single adult. The numbers only get worse for working families: 77% pay less than the living wage for a family with two adults (one working) with two children. These figures are even more devastating when compared to the numbers being posted by corporations and Wall Street. While millions desperately try to make ends meet, U.S. corporations are reaping record profits. Between July and September alone, they raked in money at the all-time high of $1.66 trillion.

The appalling disparities between people and corporations are brought to light by findings in this annual report Job Gap report. The report, which supplies data for all counties in Washington, calculates a living wage for a variety of family sizes, and then measures how many job openings in Washington pay that wage. A living wage is a wage that allows a family to meet its basic needs without public assistance and provides it some ability to save money for emergencies and to plan ahead. The report finds that in Washington a single adult needs to earn $31,783 a year to meet his or her needs. A family of four with two working adults needs $78,069 a year.

The report also finds that, in Washington, for every 17 job seekers, there is only one available job that pays a living wage of $58,240 a year for a family of three. The shortfall in living wage jobs forces families to make impossible decisions, juggling scarce dollars between buying milk for the baby or gas for the car.

For many in Washington, public investments in families and communities are more important than ever. Yet supports like unemployment insurance, child care, and basic health are threatened by the public revenue crisis, while corporate profits escalate
