Economic Justice

our systems have given too much power and influence to the wealthy. we need economic justice to bring balance to top-heavy systems.

We organize around economic justice by supporting labor rights, consumer protections, and opposing the agenda of corporate interests and their influence over our democracy. While big business is lobbying and funding corruption, WashingtonCAN is using a large grassroots movement to fight back to raise wages, defend democracy, and promote the working class.

Consumer Protections

Minimum wage is under attack and consumers are being abused with weaponized fees to do it.

WE HAVE A WAY TO FIGHT BACK AND #FIGHTTHEFEES!

Delivery App corporations like DoorDash and Uber Eats have made record profits while drivers pay the price. Now they want consumers to pay the price of providing minimum wage to workers after raking in pandemic profits. A recent study found that across all on-demand delivery jobs, average pay was $9.58/hour after expenses — about half of Seattle’s minimum wage.

In response, drivers and consumers are coming together to demand the same fair wages that every other business in Seattle pays. Those wages are good for workers and good for our economy!

WEAPONIZING MONEY TO GENERATE CONFLICT AMONG COMMUNITY MEMBERS IS CORPORATIONS’ OLDEST PLAY IN THE BOOK, AND WE’RE NOT FALLING FOR IT. NO MORE POLITICAL GAMES. WE’RE TIRED OF THE LIES AND GREED. IT’S TIME TO FIGHT THE FEE!
— Working Washington

consumers are being retaliated against.

In January, those minimum wage protections went into effect and three apps – DoorDash, Uber Eats, and Instacart – have used it as an excuse to add even MORE junk fees to every order. Unlike their competitors, these three have misled customers about the truth behind their tactics. Some even added new fees to users outside of Seattle!

Seattle City Council is considering caving to Delivery App corporations and undoing these gains rather than holding these multi-billion dollar corporations accountable for underpaying workers and harming consumers.

Stand with drivers and consumers FIGHT THE FEES!

Labor Rights

Raise the wage - Burien

Wages in Burien aren’t keeping pace with nearby cities or with the cost of living -- especially rising housing costs. Right now, a person working a full-time minimum wage job in Burien must spend 60% of their income to rent a 1-bedroom apartment.

When workers earn a living wage, everyone benefits. Families have more income to spend at local businesses and on necessities like childcare and health care. They‘re less likely to miss a rental payment and become homeless. Strong-paying jobs make our communities stronger.

Pro-Union

We stand in support of unions and active efforts to unionize across all areas. Unions are why we have many of the most basic labor rights.

Unions with strong contracts contribute toward strong communities and economic growth. We mobilize our base against the driving force, corporate greed, to side with workers for a prosperous Washington for everyday people, not just the wealthiest at the top.
