HB 1178: Sentencing Enhancements
Recommended by the Criminal Sentencing Task Force, this legislation would give judges the discretion to impose weapon enhancements concurrently instead of mandating that they run consecutively. Currently, weapon enhancements significantly lengthen sentences, often disproportionately on people of color. WashingtonCAN, as a Task Force participant, supports this reform to provide judges with more flexibility, reduce excessive sentencing practices, and introduce measures to reduce recidivism while promoting restorative justice.
