Democracy Vouchers Are One Step Closer to Renewal in Seattle—We Still Need Your Help!
The Democracy Voucher Program (CB 120957) has passed Seattle City Council's Governance, Accountability, and Economic Development Committee, moving people-powered elections closer to renewal.
The full City Council will vote on CB 120957 on April 22. If approved, Seattle voters will have the opportunity to renew the property tax levy funding the Democracy Voucher Program, a critical tool for equitable elections.
Why This Matters:
In 2015, Seattle voters passed I-122, a WashingtonCAN member-led Initiative known as "Honest Elections Seattle", to reform the way campaigns are typically financed for candidates, including campaign contribution limits for lobbyists and contractors, and Democracy Vouchers distributed by the Seattle Ethics and Elections Commission (SEEC) to eligible Seattle residents.
- Empowers everyday residents to participate in campaign financing
- Encourages diverse candidates to run for office
- Reduces the influence of large, out-of-city donors
