WashingtonCAN is seeking motivated individuals and people to join our Phone Organizing Team. Phone Canvassers serve a vital role on the front lines forefront of today’s progressive fights change, and build skills fundamental to a career in community organizing and advocacy and organizer experience is key to anyone seeking a career in politics.
WashingtonCAN is a grassroots community with over 44,000 members in WA State, and is an organization specializing in direct community contact on behalf of progressive causes. WashingtonCAN is currently working on several issue-based campaigns: Universal Healthcare, Mass Liberation (re-frame of mass incarceration), Housing Justice, and further democratizing our institutions, legal processes, boards, laws, etc. In 2024 Phone Canvassers will have the opportunity to work on several progressive and community-centered initiatives as well.
Position Description:
Phone canvassers develop and engage the WashingtonCAN community to activate members on our organization’s election work and our issue campaigns, conveying information to existing members about our mission, vision, values, and overall ongoing work on issues like Healthcare, Mass Liberation, Housing, Reproductive Justice, and Gender, Racial, Economic Justice. The Phone Team's operations motivate and empower current members to continue and deepen their involvement in creating political change in our communities together.
The primary responsibilities of this job position include recruiting new members at the door, fundraising, updating them on current campaigns and issues areas, activating members to get more deeply involved/volunteer. During election time, you will to do Get Out The Vote work.
Desired Qualifications:
A commitment to fighting for racial, gender, and economic justice.
Experience in community or labor organizing is desired, but not required.
Ability to develop and implement goals based on grassroots strategies and tactics.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team, committed to helping others.
Be open to work in an environment where diversity based on race, nationality, gender, age, sexual orientation and physical ability is an important value.
Speaking a second language is appreciated but not required. Desired languages include Spanish, Somali, Arabic, Russian, Punjabi, and Vietnamese.
Self-motivated, resourceful, creativity and problem solving skills.
Effective communication and active listening skills.
Values self-improvement, able to accept praise and constructive criticism while implementing feedback and evaluation.
Canvassing experience, volunteer experience, work with grassroots politics, campaigns/elections, voter registration or working in communities of color are preferred but not required.
Good time management and the ability to work under pressure.
Responsibilities:
Presenting accurate information to members and the public.
Maintaining professionalism in phone and office work.
Consistency in meeting shift expectations and organization standards.
Fulfilling all responsibilities as outlined in Policies and Procedures.
Performing all administrative functions accurately, such as recording member information, schedule, paperwork, and calls to action.
Executing specific responsibilities in conjunction with issue campaigns.
Co-operating in all training in the office.
And other duties as required by the Managers and Canvass Director.
The Phone Organizer position is a flexible, part-time position with an hourly pay starting at $22, plus bonus incentives, health and dental coverage, paid holiday, vacation, sick leave, and other benefits after 90 days.‘
